My Holidays

My holidays

On my two weeks holidays I had "ups" and "downs". The "down" was that in the first week my daughter and I were sick. We spent all week at home, especially in bed. My little boy wasn't very happy as we couldn't play with him.

On Easter Sunday my children and I went to my mum's place and all together went to look for the Easter Eggs in her garden. The Children had a lot of fun.

The second week was much better and the best part was the last Saturday of the holidays when we went to Easter Show! We saw how the company "Dairy Farmers" milk the cows and watched the horses parade. The children had heaps of fun. They went on a train ride, car ride and pony ride. Breno, my little boy enjoyed the walk at the nursery where we saw and patted the lambs, the piglets and others baby animals. It was a great day!

Our hodlidays were fully worth it as we did not have to worry about "the clock" and we could do whatever we wanted!

Swine Flu

The Swine Flu is a virus originated in Mexico and is worrying the health authorities as it can spread quickly and cause a pandemic.

A pandemic is when a virus gets out of control and infects lots of people.

Virus experts believe that this new virus is a combination of bird, pig and human flu. Because it is a new virus the human body has not build immunity yet and people are getting very sick.

Although Scientists are working hard to create a flu vaccine, it is not available yet and swine flu is being treated with medicines. It spreads in the normal way our flu does, through coughing and spluttering and the symptoms are the same.

There are no confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Australia yet, but if happens the country is ready for it.

In Brazil there are four confirmed cases of infection and the health minister said the patients are doing well. The infected people had been in Mexico and United States recently and there are no sign of infection in the people they had contact to.

Mothers Day

I am not sure about the origin of Mother's Day in Brazil. I could not find any specific information about it. I guess that basically the celebration exists for stabilish the same tradition that is held in USA and around the world.

Although around 46 countries honour mothers with a special day not all celebrates in the same date. Few countries such as Australia, United States, Denmark, Italy and others celebrate it on the second Sunday in May.

The idea of a national Mother's Day began in United States during the 1870's. It was originally a plea from Julia Ward Howe (an author and a leader of the abolitionist and women suffrage movements) for mothers around the world to rally together for the end of the war. But was the amercican Anne Marie Jarvis the idea of prevailing Mother's Day celebrations.

Anne hoped that a day dedicated to mothers everywhere would strengthen family bonds and increase appreciation and respect for parents whilist they where alive. She moved a campaign sending hundreds of letters to legislators, businessmen and executives at state and national levels to establishment of a national Mother's Day.

She did not stop there. Together with a committee plans was made for making Mother's Day an international event.

Anne did not end up very happy with her achivement because of the commercialization around the day. She wanted to be a day of sentiment and loving intentions not profit!

ANZAC DAY

ANZAC DAY is celebrated on 25th of April each year. The letters stands for: "Australian and New Zeland Army Corps".

It is a such special day that it was made a holiday. It is a day to remember the brave men and women who have served the country in times of war. On ANZAC DAY people show thanks for those who have fought for Australia.

The Australian soldiers are called "Diggers". The most famous hero from the First World War is Simpson. He and his Donkey called "Duffy" helped during the war to bring back wounded soldiers from the battlefield to the dressing session.

Most countries have a Defence Force which are the people working in the army, navy or air force. Defend means to keep safe. The Australian defence Force keeps the country safe and protects people.

During the ANZAC DAY service people in Australia say the "ODE", which is part of the poem:

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them."

Another thing that people do on ANZAC DAY is to lay flowers and wreaths of red poppies at the bottom of memorials as a way of saying that they have remembered these brave people.

ANZAC DAY is a day to consider the bravery of the soldiers and to show respect to their memory.

Brazilian Superstitions

Superstitions in my country:
I
n Brazil we say that it is bad luck to walk under a ladder.
We also say that is not good to jump over others legs. It means that something bad may happen to their health.
We say that to come across a black cat on Fridays is bad luck.

Friday the 13th is a bad day or not a good luck day! But I love it. Don't ask me why, I don't know why!
On New Year's Eve it is good luck jump 7 waves at the beach and make wishes or think about your resolutions. on this evening it is also good to wear red undies if you are looking for love or yellow if you are looking for money/better job or white if you want peace!

About me

I came to Australia in August 2001 and started my life here as an English student at City central College in Sydney. It was very hard in the beginning for so many reasons. First because I was alone, with no family and no friends, secondly because I quit my job in my country as a lawyer to try some sort of different lifestyle that I didn't even know what it was all about. I didn't know what I was looking for! I just wanted to make changes in my life. I wanted to faced my fears, and that was a big thing. It wasn't a simple adventure like most young people do, like going overseas, learning the language, partying, and gettting involved with all aspects that this kind of experience can bring to someone.

For me, it was like facing that fact that I was alone, that I didn't speak the language, didn't have a job or any way of earning an income. Another thing was that I didn't have my family with me so it was the scariest feeling that I ever had!

Despite all of these feelings and fears, I had the joy of complete freedom that I can't explain! And I wanted to test myself and discover my inner strength.

Many things happened and now after 9 years I am facing different issues, like: what sort of new qualification I want to get in order to have a new working experience, and now that I have children, will I stay in Australia indefinitely or will I go back to my country? Over there I have family and friends that can help me start again, or will I continue to live in Australia which is a safer place for my children. Here, they can have a better quality of life. I don't know the answer yet. What I really know is that I want to make the most of it, studying and enjoying the Australian lifestyle with my children.

My last holiday

My last holiday was two days short trip to camp at Windang Park with my two children and few friends. We were in three families.

Each family had their own tend and ours was the smaller one. Wasn't that nice as I thought would be because the weather didn't help much. Just a couple hours after assembling the tend, started to rain and the wind was so strong that snapped one side of the tend. So we end up sleeping in the humidity and with the tend almost in our heads.

Next morning was a beautiful sunny day but again in afternoon another blast came to the camp.
The second night wasn't that restful as I wished so I left with my children in the next morning before everybody else. I was so tired that I spent the whole weekend resting.

The good was that, besides the weather, my children could enjoyed the trip without noticed my stress or my tiredness.
