Swine Flu

The Swine Flu is a virus originated in Mexico and is worrying the health authorities as it can spread quickly and cause a pandemic.

A pandemic is when a virus gets out of control and infects lots of people.

Virus experts believe that this new virus is a combination of bird, pig and human flu. Because it is a new virus the human body has not build immunity yet and people are getting very sick.

Although Scientists are working hard to create a flu vaccine, it is not available yet and swine flu is being treated with medicines. It spreads in the normal way our flu does, through coughing and spluttering and the symptoms are the same.

There are no confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Australia yet, but if happens the country is ready for it.

In Brazil there are four confirmed cases of infection and the health minister said the patients are doing well. The infected people had been in Mexico and United States recently and there are no sign of infection in the people they had contact to.
